Walls Feeling Flat? These Textured Finishes Add Instant Character

An expert guide to limewash, Venetian plaster, and Roman clay—natural wall finishes that add texture, character, and depth to your home.

A KED-approved look at the pros, cons, and best uses for limewash, plaster, and clay walls

Textured walls are having a moment, but the truth is, they never really went out of style. From centuries-old limewash to the luxe polish of Venetian plaster, these finishes are rooted in ancient techniques that bring timeless character to modern interiors.

At Kristen Elizabeth Design, we love using texture to add depth and subtle drama to a space. In our recent Neoclassic Revival project, we incorporated a variety of refined materials and finishes—including classic wall textures—to complement the home’s architecture and elevate the everyday.

In this guide, we’re breaking down some of the most popular wall textures along with tips for choosing the right finish for your home.

The Case for Textured Walls

Textured wall finishes bring dimension, softness, and warmth to interiors. They’re a more subtle alternative to wallpaper or bold paint colors, adding visual interest and sophistication without overwhelming the space.

Textured walls are a great way to:

  • Add depth and patina

  • Enhance natural light and shadow

  • Create a timeless look that enhances a variety of styles

  • Soften contemporary spaces or add an edge to traditional ones

Whether you’re designing a moody powder room, an elegant entryway, or a cozy primary suite, the right texture can completely transform a room. Below, we’re diving into some of the textures we love, where to use them, and the pros and cons of each so you can decide what will work best in your home.

Limewash: A Soft, Earthy Finish

Limewash is a type of paint made from an ancient technique of crushed limestone and water. The result is a soft, chalky finish with a beautiful matte texture that subtly shifts in color depending on the light.

Where to Use It:

Limewash is suitable for interior or exterior walls and can be painted over stone or brick. Neutral tones are most popular, but it comes in a range of colors—typically softer, muted hues due to the natural pigments. It works especially well in bedrooms, dining rooms, and other low-traffic areas. It pairs beautifully with organic, minimal, or European-inspired interiors.

Pros:

  • Breathable, odorless, hypoallergenic, and non-toxic

  • Natural, eco-friendly, and biodegradable

  • Bacteria and mold resistant

  • Elegant, natural patina over time

  • Can help strengthen porous surfaces

Cons:

  • Not ideal if you want high contrast or bold color

  • Less durable in high-moisture or high-traffic areas

  • Vulnerable to scuffs, spills, or water damage

  • Requires touch-ups more often than traditional paint

In our Neoclassic Revival project, the linen-toned limewashed walls in the dining room provided a perfect backdrop to layered textures and antique-inspired accents, amplifying the old-world charm of the space.

Venetian Plaster: Classic Luxury with a Polished Edge

Venetian Plaster is a high-end finish made from slaked lime and marble dust, applied in layers and burnished to a smooth, often glossy surface. It can mimic the look of polished stone or marble and adds a beautiful richness to a space. Its elegant and timeless appeal offers the perfect balance of tradition and modern luxury.

Where to Use It:

Venetian plaster can be used either indoors or out, and on both walls and ceilings. It’s a beautiful choice for bathrooms, dining rooms, and formal living spaces—anywhere you want a refined, luxurious feel.

Pros:

  • Durable, moisture-resistant, and easy to clean

  • Elegant sheen and visual depth

  • Long-lasting with proper care

  • Wide range of custom color options

  • Eco-friendly and VOC-free

Cons:

  • Requires a specialized application process

  • Higher cost and more prep time

  • Durable, but needs touch-ups over time, especially in exterior or high-traffic areas

Whether you’re going for a sleek contemporary look or a more classic European aesthetic, Venetian plaster brings instant sophistication and timeless appeal.

Roman Clay: Matte Texture with Modern Warmth

A hybrid paint and plaster finish, Roman Clay is made of clay, water, and natural pigments. It produces a smooth, low-sheen surface with soft tonal variation, similar to Venetian plaster but with a velvety, matte appearance instead of a polished finish.

Where to Use It:

It’s ideal on interior walls, ceilings, furniture, and other decorative elements. Roman clay shines in living rooms, bedrooms, and any space where you want a warm, tactile feel that’s more dimensional than paint.

Pros:

  • Soft, matte, velvety texture

  • Natural, eco-friendly, and breathable

  • Helps regulate humidity levels

  • Durable and resistant to scratches and dents

  • Easier to maintain than some other wall finishes

Cons:

  • Not suitable for outdoor use or high-moisture areas

  • Needs sealing in humid or high-traffic spaces

  • Requires a trained applicator for best results

  • More expensive than limewash, but more affordable than Venetian plaster

Roman clay is a great option if you’re looking for texture with understated elegance—a way to add depth without the shine.

How to Choose the Right Wall Texture for Your Space

Choosing the right wall texture comes down to your aesthetic goals and how the space will be used. Here are a few factors to help you decide:

  • Design Style: Minimal and organic spaces pair well with limewash and Roman clay, while traditional or dramatic spaces might benefit from the sheen of Venetian plaster

  • Room Function: High-moisture areas need durable, sealed finishes like Venetian plaster

  • Lighting: Textures interact beautifully with natural light, amplifying shadows, movement, and patina

  • Maintenance: Consider how much wear and tear the space will get, and how often you’re willing to touch up or maintain the walls

Taking time to align your texture with both form and function will ensure a result that’s practical and beautiful.

Designer Tips: What to Know Before You Commit

Before committing to a finish, keep these designer-approved tips in mind to help you make the most of your investment.

  • Hire a professional: Especially for plaster finishes, application is an art

  • Test your finish: Try samples first to see how it looks in different light

  • Embrace imperfection: These finishes are meant to shift and change; it’s part of their beauty

Textured walls are a beautiful way to bring depth, character, and artistry into your home. Whether you lean rustic or refined, there’s a finish to fit your space and your style.
